Overthinking Image

Obsession is defined as an idea or thought

that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person’s mind; to be obsessed with someone or something.

Is obsession a good thing? Y/N

Thinking about this for a few hours, I was stuck. But looking up the definition of the word, it brought me clarity. The words to describe ‘obsession’ often have negative connotations, they do not ring positivity.

For example, when I hear the word “intrude”, I think of someone breaking into my house and scaring my dog, or a mean boy stealing my diary and sharing the depths of it with the world.

To be obsessed, is to let whatever or whoever take over and distract you from what is important.

When I think about personal obsessions, I think back to phases in high school. All I wanted to talk about was Twilight or boy bands or dreamy celebrities double my age (Ryan Gosling, I’m looking at you). I suppose maybe that’s a pleasant obsession? or distraction? It was indeed something to preoccupy my mind, rather than doing my homework.

However, I think about how times have changed.

As a 21-year-old girl, I’m lacking “obsessions”, yet, I obsess and overthink daily.

“What outfit should I wear?” could keep me up all night and I still won’t reach a conclusion. I could spend hours on social media obsessing over girls and their Instagram personas. I find myself down the social media rabbit hole and just like Alice in Wonderland, I have no business being in this hole.

I don’t want to be obsessed anymore. I just want my diary back.
